Beacons of Light: Celebrating Art and Community in Parnell
This summer, Parnell once again shines brightly with the return of Beacons of Light—a captivating public art installation that illuminates the community with creativity, colour, and connection. A project brought to life by the Parnell Business Association, the Beacons of Light celebrate the vibrant artistic spirit of New Zealand, providing a unique way for visitors and locals to enjoy art in a magical, illuminated form.
Running until 6 January, the Beacons of Light invite you to explore Parnell by night as ten towering 2.5-metre illuminated beacons display the works of two remarkable artists: renowned New Zealand landscape painter Tony Ogle and celebrated cubist artist James Watkins. Both artists have brought their unique visions to the project, creating a harmonious interplay of colour, light, and form that celebrates our landscapes, creativity, and community.
Tony Ogle, represented locally by Parnell Gallery, is one of New Zealand’s most recognised and loved landscape artists. Known for his iconic depictions of Aotearoa’s coastal and rural scenes, Ogle’s work celebrates the beauty of our natural environment, often evoking feelings of nostalgia and serenity. His attention to light, shadow, and vibrant colour makes his pieces truly sing, providing a perfect fit for this year’s glowing installation.
Complementing Ogle’s works are the pieces of James Watkins, an esteemed cubist painter and Gallery Manager at Parnell’s International Art Centre. Watkins’ bold, geometric style and vivid colour palettes breathe energy and structure into the Beacons of Light, providing a dynamic contrast to Ogle’s organic forms. Together, the two artists’ works play off one another beautifully, offering viewers a multi-faceted experience that celebrates diverse approaches to New Zealand’s art and landscapes.
Now in its second year, the Beacons of Light installation is a much-anticipated highlight of the summer season in Parnell. Created as a way to enliven the community and bring people together, this project reflects the Parnell Business Association’s ongoing dedication to supporting the arts, enriching the local environment, and creating experiences that inspire and uplift. The beacons, illuminated at night, invite passersby to slow down, explore, and engage with art in an immersive and unexpected way. As you stroll through Parnell, whether for an evening out or a twilight wander, the Beacons of Light provide an enchanting visual experience that transforms familiar spaces into something extraordinary.
