About this artwork

“Red Target is the first of twelve circular images exploring the relationship of colours to the musical notes of the octave of sound.”

“The width of the bands of harmonics and their distance apart is related to their position on an expanding scale of notes”.

“The central blue green circle is red’s first harmonic, the encircling yellow band is red’s second harmonic, the violet band red’s third harmonic, the outer orange band is red’s fourth and final harmonic”.

“The blue between yellow and violet bands and the red between violet and orange bands are shared harmonics of these pairs of colours”.

“The blue violet background is the first harmonic of the outer orange harmonic”. – Michael Smither

Artist bio

Michael Smither is a contemporary New Zealand artist renowned for his work as a painter and printmaker. His work often depicts everyday life, landscapes, and domestic scenes, characterised by strong compositions, clarity, and a distinctive use of colour.

Smither’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in observation, where his precise, sharp-edged style captures not just the appearance of his subjects but their inherent structure and atmosphere. His work is often concerned with the interplay between form, light, and space, lending his compositions a striking clarity and sense of balance. This analytical approach extends to both his paintings and prints, where simplified forms and carefully modulated colour create a heightened sense of reality.
