Artist bio

Kathryn Bartlett is a contemporary artist, based in Auckland, New Zealand. Her sculptural practice centres around moulded glass forms, often on the verge of abstraction, grounded in her experiences and surroundings.

Apparitions, emotions, and social observations inform her practice and the inherent translucence of glass provides a mysterious, often sensuous interplay with a constantly shifting physical environment. Kathryn’s interest in abstraction creates a sense of freedom in movement and form, which is mirrored in her sculpting practice. Creating her works in clay first, Kathryn is able to intuitively develop and rework her sculptures until they reach their final mould and kiln firing stage.

In discussing her creative methods, Kathryn states, “Creating cast glass sculptures is an intimate process, allowing me to express how I view and react to the world. Not only does it provide me with an important creative and emotional outlet, but I also love seeing other people form a connection with my work.”

Kathryn left her successful career in publishing to pursue sculpture and other creative interests. In the 15 years since, Kathryn’s work is has been exhibited around New Zealand and is held in private collections both in locally and internationally. In 2020, her work was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards in the 3D art category.
