Junction Magazine Feb 2025 featuring Parnell Gallery glass sculpture artist, Kathryn Bartlett

Junction Magazine recently highlighted the impressive work of established glass artist Kathryn Bartlett, whose cast glass creations are known for their emotional depth and luminous beauty. Inspired by observations, experiences, and memories, Kathryn crafts each piece with meticulous care, starting with wax or clay sculptures before creating robust moulds capable of withstanding the kiln’s intense heat.

Her intricate process continues as lead crystal glass flows into the moulds, cooling slowly over several days. What follows is a painstaking phase of finishing and polishing, where her attention to detail brings out the final work’s captivating textures, colours, and light-filled qualities. Kathryn describes casting glass as “a long and intricate process that requires precision, patience, and skill.”

A finalist in numerous prestigious awards, including the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award and the RT Nelson Small Sculpture Awards, Kathryn has exhibited widely, including at Artform Gallery in Matakana. Her work is also proudly represented by Parnell Gallery. She reflects, “I’m always fascinated by the complexity of our relationship with ourselves, the people around us, and our physical environment.”
