A Conversation in Colour

Anna Stichbury

20 August - 3 September

In time for the onset of spring, Parnell Gallery is delighted to present new paintings by Anna Stichbury in ‘A Conversation in Colour’.

Stichbury’s latest body of work examines the essence of colour, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in vibrant hues and dynamic compositions. The artist describes her exploration of colour as akin to savouring a sweet treat, taking time to fully experience and enjoy the richness of each shade.

Offering insight into her studio process, Stichbury says it is currently overflowing with a “cacophony of colour”, an environment brimming with vibrant and varied paintings. For ‘A Conversation in Colour’ Stichbury explains that rather than utilising her more immediate painting technique, she has intentionally slowed her process, allowing herself to fully engage with the emotions and sensations elicited by different colour combinations. This mindful approach gives the colours space to converse; to take the lead in narrative and compositional elements.

In her continuing series of large-scale floral works, Stichbury intensifies her focus on the interplay between colours, emphasising the alluring quality of each bloom’s hue through textural application of paint. In response to these larger works, the artist has created a series of petite abstract paintings by extracting then collaging dried painterly fragments from each of the floral’s paint palette onto the canvas before applying fresh paint and resin, further exploring the potent language of colour and texture.
