We are delighted to welcome contemporary sculptor, Roderick Burgess, back to our stable of artists.
Roderick Burgess is a New Zealand sculptor recognised for his figurative works in bronze cast in the lost-wax technique, and cold-cast bronze. His artistic vision centres on capturing the essence of the human form, driven by an unyielding quest to encapsulate ‘the gesture’ and a deep-rooted reverence for nature. Burgess’s sculptural practice spans a range of scales, from intimate pieces to monumental creations, the latter created primarily for private and public commissions. The Auckland-based artist captures both strength and softness in his figurative works where gesture and expression are nuanced, with an intensity suited so harmoniously to his bronze medium.
Raised in a bustling household amidst familial challenges, including his father’s post-war struggles, Burgess’s early artistic inclinations found fertile ground. A pivotal moment occurred when, while living in Australia, he witnessed a fellow surfer craft a small foot from clay over the course of an evening spent talking. The experience ignited Burgess’s passion for sculpting, and he returned to New Zealand, beginning work with clay. Initially self-taught, Burgess’s dedication led him to seek mentorship from esteemed sculptor Ron Ranby, laying the foundation for his knowledge in sculpting and casting. Subsequently, Burgess embarked on a transformative period of study under the tutelage of renowned sculptors Edwin Russell ARBS and Lorne McKean FRBS in England. Over his ten year apprenticeship, Burgess became Head Apprentice, during which time he worked on significant public projects for the acclaimed sculptors.

Returning to New Zealand in 1985, Burgess embarked on a prolific career, contributing significantly to public and private commissions. Notable projects include sculptural works such as Aspiration in Auckland’s CBD and the restoration of Sir George Grey’s sculpture for Auckland City Council. His portfolio also encompasses a diverse range of private commissions for prominent New Zealanders.
After a hiatus, Burgess has resumed his artistic practice, creating a series of new works from his home studio in Auckland. His sculptures have garnered both national and international recognition, finding homes in esteemed collections worldwide. Burgess’s artistic journey continues to evolve, guided by the enduring principles of nature and his profound understanding of the world.
Parnell Gallery has represented Roderick Burgess in previous years, and resumed representation in 2024.
