Artist Statement:
“These three flowers are arranged as wall sculptures, transcending traditional flat paintings. The choice of fluorescent pink on the back of the works infuses the white wall they hang on with a warm, radiant hue. On the front, mirrors take centre stage, serving as canvases adorned with layers of liquid glass and metallic paint.
Each flower reflects light, colour, and depth, drawing viewers into an intimate engagement with the artwork. They encourage contemplation, allowing viewers to see their own reflections mingled with their surroundings.
Inspired by the enduring pansy, a flower with a grand history, my artwork seeks to intertwine the timeless beauty of flowers with the energy of abstract expressionism. Each piece offers viewers a sanctuary of beauty, inviting moments of introspection and connection.
My Flower Clusters draw inspiration from Andy Warhol’s iconic flower prints of the 1960s, leading to the title of my artworks as ‘Flowers From Andy:’. ”
Sally Bulling is a contemporary New Zealand artist, creating abstract paintings in sculptural, wall-mounted layers that evoke an infinite energy.
Bulling’s works feature combinations of vibrant and alluring colour with rich golds, channelled into her sculptural forms. Expressive marks are created through movement, sweeping brush strokes, drips, and flicks dance together in playful tension across the surface. Every layer of the work is sensitively considered to engage and delight the viewer.
Bulling utilises mirror as her canvas, her veneers of poured liquid glass preserving the layers of paint, while the shaped edges and painted backs project an aura of light and colour on to the wall behind.
A unique and luminous light and depth is captured through her works, reflecting the viewer’s own gaze and surroundings, offering an immersive sense of interplay between viewer and artwork.
