Langdon’s work is driven by the interplay of light and shadow, particularly in how it affects the lush green terraces and volcanic craters that characterise much of the Auckland region. The ever-changing qualities of the light on these ancient forms, from one vantage point to the next, offer a constantly shifting visual palette that continues to inspire Langdon’s compositions. These landscapes are not static, but in a constant state of transformation, just as the artist’s work is ever-evolving.
Working primarily in acrylic on board and paper, Langdon’s meticulous technique ensures that every element of the landscape is thoughtfully rendered, inviting the viewer to pause and consider the nuances of each scene. Her attention to detail and sensitivity to the natural world offer an immersive and contemplative experience. Equally, her works depicting houses on the landscape presents minutely detailed evidence of domestic life, offering a stirring contemplation of our inhabitancy.
Having begun her creative journey with a background in photography and a career in teaching both art history and visual art, Langdon’s exploration of the arts took her to London, where she spent four years immersing herself in Europe’s rich cultural heritage. This period of study and exposure to centuries of artistic practice had a profound impact on her, shaping her perspective and enriching her understanding of how art can interpret and respond to the world. Upon returning to Auckland, she was immediately captivated by the landscapes that had always surrounded her but now seemed to hold new depth and meaning. In her words, “the detours I took along the way have all played a role in returning me to my love of the landscape.” Her practice revolves around the intricate portrayal of the New Zealand landscape, but with a distinctive twist: Langdon presents each subject almost as if it were a character in its own right. She frames each mountain, each crag, and each sweeping vista with the same care and attention one might devote to a portrait. In this way, she elevates the landscape into something dynamic, vibrant, and alive — worthy of deep contemplation and personal engagement.
Langdon’s work has found a dedicated audience, with her paintings held in private collections throughout New Zealand and abroad. Offering a refined, intimate, and thoughtful examination of the landscapes she holds so dear, Langdon’s work allows viewers a rare glimpse into her emotional and abundantly rich vision of the natural world.
